"Prayer is when we talk to God,
Meditation is when we listen to God."
-- Sant Rajinder Singh
The Role of Prayer and Meditation in Peace and Unity
(excerpts from a talk by Sant Rajinder Singh Ji)
"...We know many prayers are uttered in pursuit of peace. People gather
in temples, churches, and mosques to sing prayers for peace. People
gather on open ground or march through the streets carrying banners for
peace. All these prayers are in the form of talking to God, asking Him to
respond. But peace is not attained by the act of talking to God. Peace
is only attained when we sit still in the quiet of our soul and let God
talk to us. When God talk to us, He fills us with a peace unlike any
known to us on earth. We may say prayers for peace, but when we listen in
meditation, we become peace itself.
In meditation, we merge in the ocean of peace and bliss. Our entire being
becomes love and joy. And we do not have to do anything to attain it. We
neither have to march nor congregate to pray. We simply sit still and
have it. Besides attaining peace ourselves, we radiate the peace to
others. Anyone who comes in contact with us will naturally feel peaceful.
It is like sitting near the cool ocean and feeling the soft breeze upon
our skin. We no longer have to pray for peace -- we are peace.
Along with attaining peace, meditation elevates us to achieve an angle of
vision in which we become a witness to the unity in the fabric of life.
We look upon the world as an embroidered whole. All life may look like a
variety of colors, shapes, and sizes, but the texture of each is the same:
the texture of love."
'Embrace every man as your own
And shower your love freely wherever you go'
-- Sant Darshan Singh Ji
Let us learn to meditate and to open up our communication with God. Let
us sit still in the quiet of ourself and let His will flow into us and
fill us with peace and love. If each of us attained peace and unity
through meditation, the highest form of prayer, we would bring peace and
unity to the whole world."
