To: thelema93-l@nosferatu.cas.usf.edu From: BHeidrick@aol.com Subject: Re: Typhonian vs. Caliphate OTO (9407.ototyph.bh) Date: 49940708 Quoting: |sarkis@luna.cas.usf.edu (marianne sarkis) 93 |Can someone please explain what the difference between Caliphate and |Typhonian OTO is? is it a matter of lineage, leadership, phlosophy or |what? Also, who are the most prominent figures in both? The "Caliphate O.T.O." is the legally recognized (US IXth District Federal Court, 1985 e.v.) continuation of the O.T.O. of Aleister Crowley, owning the copyrights, trademarks &c. of the O.T.O. (including those of Aleister Crowley). The Typhonian O.T.O. is a term used to characterize the organization (some dispute that it is in fact an organization in the sense of having legal existence) nominally led by Kenneth Grant of England. Grant was Crowley's secretary for about a year in the 1940's e.v.. Grant received a charter for a Camp of O.T.O. from Karl Germer, Crowley's successor as head of O.T.O. Germer revoked the charter and expelled Grant from membership in 1955 e.v. After Germer's death in 1962 e.v., there was an interregnum during which Grant and others published assertions of being the head of O.T.O. Grady McMurtry learned some years after of the death of Germer. Grady came forward with papers signed by Crowley, in anticipation of such an interregnum. Grady's efforts brought the O.T.O. out of dormancy and from about a dozen members to the present count of over 2,000 in 38 countries. Grant's group denies the Lodge structure and most of the rules and traditions of O.T.O. The "Caliphate O.T.O.", legally O.T.O., simply, maintains the full traditional form of O.T.O. in Lodges structure and operating philosophy to the extent possible under local law and conditions. We also continue the orientation of O.T.O. to the Thelemic philosophy and religion brought into O.T.O. during the reign of Aleister Crowley as Outer Head of the Order (1923 e.v. to 1947 e.v.). 93 93/93 Bill Heidrick, Grand Treasurer General O.T.O.
