I really suggest you read Eshelman's book, it will make things a lot clearer
to you.
The name A.'. A.'. refers to two things:
1) the "True and Invisible Order" (or whatever you want to call it) which
lies behind the spiritual evolution of humanity, AND
2) an organization founded by Aleister Crowley and George Cecil Jones in
1906 to train aspirants in magick and yoga toward personal spiritual
evolution.
These two are connected; #1 is the eternal principle, and #2 is a
physical, manifest vehicle for #1 to perform work in the world.
The physical A.'. A.'. (#2) continues to operate today, in several
"lineages" of initiates who were initiated (by initiates who were
initiated...) by Crowley or Jones. The lineages are (by design)
independent of each other.
Of course, the name A.'. A.'. has also been abused and misused by people
who are not connected to valid lineages. (I am NOT saying that only
people with valid A.'. A.'. lineages are connected with the True and
Invisible Order, but often people represent that they are connected to
the physical A.'. A.'. when in fact they are not. By definition
[Crowley's and Jones'] only people with documented succession are
connected to this A.'. A.'.)
College of Thelema (COT) and Temple of Thelema (TOT) are NOT the A.'.
A.'. However, they are connected to it, through one particular lineage,
and are therefore also connected to the True and Invisible Order. In
Golden Dawn terms, the eternal A.'. A.'. (#1) are the "Secret Chiefs" or
"Third Order" of the COT/TOT.
This is by design; the COT and TOT are always necessarily vehicles of
the A.'. A.'. (both definitions). The COT and TOT serve the physical
A.'. A.'. by providing preparation for a candidate to the Order, and also
serve the eternal A.'. A.'. by performing certain magical work in the
world to aid in the spiritual evolution of humanity.
The COT and TOT are not meant to take the place of the A.'. A.'., but are
adjunct to it. An individual may join either or both orders and derive much
benefit without ever joining the A.'. A.'., and vice-versa.
I hope this clears a few things up, although I'm sure you will have more
to inquire about the subject.
