To: alt.magick From: tim@toad.com (Tim Maroney) Subject: Re: Maat, Amon, and the Aeons (was re: Maat Magick) Date: 10 Jan 96 16:10:33 GMT Tim Maroneywrites: >>> I still find it very difficult to accept that the procession >>> of the aeons would just happen to parallel the line-up of officers in >>> a particular Golden Dawn ceremony. CRANMER@brivs2.bartol.udel.edu (Steven Cranmer) writes: >Tim, if you're referring to the simple succession of "Isis-Osiris-Horus," >I'm *sure* this all predates the Golden Dawn by a long shot. Greek >mythology is filled with (explicit and implicit) patriarchal figures >taking over the reigns from matriarchal ones, and there's a good bit >of apocalyptic fear of male children of Zeus who would eventually >overthrow their father. > >Also, check out Jung's _Aion_ for a discussion of mythological >characterizations of the precessional "ages." I'm pretty sure the >symbolism goes back pretty far. The idea of the succession of eons is an old one to be sure. The particular line-up consisting of Osiris-Horus-Ma'at, though, was derived from the Golden Dawn 0=0 ritual, as you can see by checking Crowley's "new comment" on III:34. I don't know how he worked Isis into it, though. >>> The author might have meant that (or >>> might not) but whether he or she did or not, the whole concept seems >>> very contrived. I regard a great deal of material in GD ceremonies as >>> either arbitrary or uninspired. >> Well, you never know; Crowley may have "colored" the text of AL to >> make things more closely resemble the G.D. system which he knew well. >You bet! Where *else* would Aiwass have heard the word "nemyss?" :) Interesting point, joke or not. I am fairly convinced that the author of AL was a Golden Dawn initiate from internal evidence. -- Tim Maroney. Please CC all public responses to tim@toad.com.
