To: alt.magick.tyagi,alt.pagan.magick,alt.tarot,alt.magick,alt.thelema From: catherine yronwodeSubject: Re: Crowley's 777 and Tarot Date: Sat, 28 Jun 2003 22:45:10 GMT Brief comment on the posthumous success of the writings of Aleister Crowley: A) Co-authors, most notably: 1) Mary Desti [Sturgis] (credited as a co-author by AC in Book 4) 2) Leila Waddell (credited as a co-author by AC in Book 4) 3) Mary Butts (uncredited in Book 4, but named a co-author by Breeze) B) Posthumous editors and publishers, most notably: 1) Israel Regardie 2) Samuel Weiser 3) Donald Weiser (son and successor of Samuel Weiser) 3) Bill Breeze None of the above relates to proofs of Crowley's supposed spiritual or magical adeptship. It only relates to theories as to why his books continue to remain in print long after his death. Mary Desti Sturgis, in particular, is overlooked by Crowley scholars, yet she was a well-regarded playwright and author. Also, if genetics matters with respect to writing talent -- and i think it does -- it is worthy of note that she was the mother of the famed screenwriter and film director Preston Sturgis (whom Crowley refers to as "The Bastard" in his memoirs). Lining up those names gives me a smile -- Crowley the misogynist and racial bigot relied on the co-authorship, editorial skills, and publishing acumen of women and Jews to a remarkable degree. :-) cat yronwode Crowley Texts online at: http://www.luckymojo.com/crowley
