Here is some data: ------- William Tufts wrote: According to "The All Music Guide to the Blues" William Bunch (b. 12/21/02 d. 12/21/41) who went by the name Peetie Wheatstraw, aka "the Devil's Son-In-Law" ...was a singer and pianist who was very popular in the '30s and died in a collision between his car and a train. ------- Kevin & Beth wrote: Peetie Wheatstraw was the performing name of William Bunch. He was born in Ripley, Tennessee in 1902 and moved to East St Louis, Illinois, around 1929. From 1930 until his death in 1941, Wheatstraw recorded over 160 songs, (81 records) playing guitar or piano to accompany his own vocals. Charlie Jordan, Big Joe Williams and Peetie were close friends. Paul Garon wrote an excellent book, "The Devil's Son-In-Law" (one of Peetie's nicknames) but it is very hard to find. Wheatstraw also referred to himself as "The High Sheriff from Hell." He died when the car he was in crashed into a train boxcar. He is buried in Cotton Plant, Arkansas. His complete recordings are available on CD on Document Records. ------- Chuck Nevitt wrote: Here is a page on Peetie Wheatstraw from the bluecafe: http://www.blueflamecafe.com/Peetie_Wheatstraw.html ------- From the above-cited URL (which contains a picture and a sound clip), comes the following information: "Wheatstraw was also a talented lyric writer. Many of his songs contain elaborate, clever phrases that, more often than not, focus on themes of sex, death, and the supernatural, often with the imperative that one should enjoy life to the fullest." In addition to playing with the singer-guitarists named above, The Devil's Son-In-Law also recorded with Lonnie Johnson, Kokomo Arnold, and Charlie McCoy.
