in response to a request for information on Lucifer and Ahriman:
'Lucifer' was the nickname given to the planet Venus (Latin,
meaning 'light-bringer') on account of its proximity in
appearance to sunrise. it has also been called Noctifer,
for appearing so near to sunset.

Lucifer was an apparent pseudonym of the King of Babylon
as referenced in the Book of Isaiah of Judeochristian
scripture, and this was co-opted during or after its
translation into English (Vulgate if memory serves)
into a referent to the Christian Devil despite its
dissonance with the traditional Mazdaist darkness-schema.

'Ahriman' was (and may still be) the name used by the
most dualist of the Zoroastrian lineages (the Mazdaist
an apparent extreme) to refer to their Devil (the Evil
Spirit, esp. of Darkness). the name derives from the
precursor 'Angra Mainyu', and is contrasted with their
preferred God, 'Ahura Mazda', the latter dualist 'Ormuzd'.

Jeffrey Burton Russell has a lovely quatrine of books
which detail the history of the concept of the Devil, and
I am heavily influenced by his _The Devil_ here.

re URLs for devil symbols and sigils:
the closest thing I can offer is a draft (not for wide
distribution) of a text on Satanist Symbolism, into
which I may place the text on Lucifer and Ahriman above.
the URL is

and that directory even contains a 'ref.lucifer' compilation file.

blessed beast!
