Hold on. Satanism, at it's very core, is a religion of SELF. Satanists nurture and shape the self. The self is one of the few things deserving of worship. Satanism is all about YOU. It's not about Anton's essays or opinions -- anyone who agrees with everything someone says is mad. Also at the core of Satanism is the ability to question. Question everything. Examine everything. This includes LaVey's work. Why is Lucifer important? He's (or in many mythologies, She) the Morning Star, the Light Bearer, and in Xian mythology, Lucifer got thrown out for questioning God's authority, disagreeing with the way the show was being run, and eventually trying to take over. Why should a dead man's opinion matter to you? You hit the nail on the head when you say that Satanism is not about herd mentality, but you're not putting it into practice. You're asking "is it okay if I do this?" YOU are the one that makes that decision. Luciferi Goldfish p.s. Nice nic!
