The Satan/Lucifer relationship is historically murky.
At least by Milton's time the assumption was that "Lucifer"
was Satan's original, pre-Fall name - sort of like Tolkien's
Melkor before he became Morgoth. Yet it was in the act of
conscious separation from the God/Universe that the Prince
of Darkness gained both identity and significance; before
this affirmation he was indistinguishable from the other
"Angels"/_neteru_ [or Tolkien's Ainur].

There is a lot of interesting speculation that follows from
this situation/problem.
