The term Satanism has been used often. The first copyrighted version of the term I've come across is 'The Satanic Mass' by H.T.F Rhodes, published in 1954, twelve years earlier than LaVey used the term. The book covers the history of Satanism covering hundreds of years. If LaVey wanted sole ownership of a term he should have used a new term rather than lifting the title of his work from someone else. But then, he lifted his works from someone else, so maybe it does make sense...
