Snorre Sturlason depicts them as concentric circles, with the world tree in the centre somewhere in asia, and the great worm making the circumference. As he was very obviously influenced by the Odin-cult, christianity and church dogma, this is not a very reliable source. The original layout is more likely to have been thought of as a sphere-within-sphere model - the norse had travelled far enough to be aware of the earth as spherical.
