The Bahir

To be very precise, what is needed is the ashes of a red heifer
sacrificed in the prescribed manner (which means, inter alia, sacrificed
in the Temple Sanctuary). For purification purposes, a very minimal
amount of ash was needed, so one red heifer's ashes could last a long
time; the ashes of the last red heifer thus remained available for use
for 2 or 3 centuries after the Temple was destroyed by the Romans, since
the purification itself did not require a fully functioning Temple.
A red heifer that apparently meets the Biblical requirements is alive in
Israel, but until the Temple is rebuilt.....

and pursuing peace, loving people and bringing them closer to Torah.
