For purification purposes, a very minimal amount of ash was needed, so one red heifer's ashes could last a long time; the ashes of the last red heifer thus remained available for use for 2 or 3 centuries after the Temple was destroyed by the Romans, since the purification itself did not require a fully functioning Temple. A red heifer that apparently meets the Biblical requirements is alive in Israel, but until the Temple is rebuilt.....
