karma is typically associated with cause and effect. the cause 
are one's choices in life, the effect is dependent upon a 
cosmic, deity-derived, or personal morality which sets demerits
and merits on particular behaviors, circumstantial response,
or intentionality. often this is connected with the notion of
reincarnation or rebirth, in that the merits and demerits apply
toward the station of birth to which one is destined.

luck is also divided into 'good' and 'bad' like karma, though
it is less often associated with moral repercussion and more
often the result of some magical or divine activity. while you
may 'earn good karma', good luck is usually obtained by spell, 
adulation of a favoring supernatural being, initiating it with
some particular act like tossing coins into well, or acquiring
some charm or amulet as a kind of luck battery or magnet. both
luck and karma can be seen as fluids, energies or substances, 
though karma is usually not attached to objects as in charms. 
luck isn't so much a reward, as you say, as much as a result of 
entering a 'zone' or enveloping oneself with some aura of fortune.

tantrics probably have all manner of attitude toward luck,
while karma is likely quite a popular notion. those who think
that the gods control the cosmos aside from the aspirant may
equate karma with luck in a way, while those who consider the
atman and brahman the only reality may consider both luck and
karma to be illusions.
