Camphausen's "Encyclopedia of Erotic Wisdom" (highly rcommended!!!) Shingon ("true word") is a very large Japanese Mahayana Buddhist sect founded in the 700s that contains elements deliberately drawn from Indian tantrism and vajrayana yoga, including the use of mandalas, mudras, and worship of the vajra. In the 1100s Shingon in turn gave rise to a "left-handed path" Buddhist tanric sect called Tachikawa that emulated vamamarga tantrism and included the practice of sexual religious rites. The Tachikawa sect was outlawed by the Japanese government but persisted until the late 1600s. Some Tachikawa texts remain in existence, albeit sealed under "do not open" signs in Shingon monasteries. Van Gulik is cited as a further authority on this subject. Camphausen does not mention if any Tachikawa texts are available in English.
