I agree which is why I brought up his name in this discussion. My faculty advisor met with Castaneda many times at UCLA and in Sonora in the early days and got to see his case notes and other documentation. He has no doubt that the books are honest renderings of Mr. Castaneda's experiences. The charges of fraud tend to come from anthropologists who never leave their offices. They were offended that he left the security and distance of the academic world and actually imersed himself in the culture and practices he was writing about. I think there are paralels between this controversy and the discussion at hand. There is a difference between writing about something one has personally experienced such as W. Y. Evans-Wentz did and writing about something one has only read about.
