To: alt.religion.orisha,alt.lucky.w,alt.paranormal.spells.hexes.magic,alt.magick,alt.magick.tyagi From: eballard@sas.upenn.edu (Eoghan Ballard) Subject: Re: Marie Laveau, Voodoo, and Hoodoo Date: Sun, 13 May 2001 09:42:08 -0400 I am not interested in deconstructing this entire post. It is a very interesting one and I am eager to see further elaborations. I did want to clarify one point because I feel it is in details such as this that major issues are clarified. The term Zombi, at least in "mainstream Haitian Vodou" and the American Popular culture adaptation of such things refers to a person enslaved by magic, medicine, or both. However, we cannot always be sure that they are refering to Zombi. In this case clearly they are not. In Kikongo there are two words that to western ears seem nearly identical but which are quite distinct. One Nzambi, refers to "god" or "a god" or to someone of exceptional power. These things are not so clearly defined and separated in Kongo thought as they are in Western concepts. The other word is nzumbi which refers to a wandering spirit. If Marie was mainly working from the Kongo base which is the origins of Hoodoo, then she probably meant the former and not the latter. By the way, both terms are present in one form or another in Haitian Vodou. Eoghan
