secrets generally are information sets which are protected by
an interested party from being revealed to another through 
concealment, deception, or aggression. these may be artificial 
or natural.

the secrets of mysticism (which I tend to call 'mysteries') are
self-transformative agents, whether in the form of reflections 
of the real, tools by which the real may sculpted or apprehended, 
catalyzing agents, or projections of some coming reality (prophecy).

the cosmos may conceal them as long as there is will and
intent behind the concealment. society may conceal them, for
example, so as to disempower the individual and keep a cache 
of dependent members of the Herd for service to that society.
an insect may conceal its identity as such, for example, as
a function of its success in survival (camouflage).

another reason secrets may be concealed (as in a secret society)
is so that they may serve as bait, providing incentive to 
increase membership. whether the bait is worth the effort to
become such a member is to be determined and dependent upon the
particular secret and needs of the individual involved.

secrets generally may be a part of the inherent structure
of the cosmos only if there is a 'Creator' or 'Designer' to
put them there. these, if any exist, may be found through 
exploration.

a secret is a role a set of information plays with RESPECT
to an observer. what is a secret to you may not be to me
or vice versa.
