This is really quite natural, since these four states of matter are
plainly visible to us (with the exception of plasma -- a fire isn't
really a plasma).

This is plain wrong!  At those times matter was thought to be
continuous, i.e. divisible without any limit.  A piece of solid,
liquid, air, or even fire, was thought to be divisible in several
pieces of the same, were each piece in turn was though to be
divisible too -- et cetera et cetera, without limit.  Any piece of
solid, or liquid, was certainly NOT (and has never been) considered
to be an 'atom', i.e. an indivisible unit!!!

Not quite -- you need to do some reading of the history of sciences!
These elements weren't discovered until chemistry was born!
