generally it depends on what you're doing. you explain below
that you've got a target whose sock you've obtained. there-
fore the nature of the activity would help to determine the 
best tactic. with healing it might well be different than 
some kind of magical attack, for example.

that's a very good indicator that you should continue in that manner.
watch for results.

untrue. the foot is an age-old target of any spell, this being
a symbolic omphalos point connecting with Mama Terra. personal
concerns (objects which have been in touch with the target of
the spell, esp. those which are intimate or bodily parts) 
are always powerful magical tools.
