We live among the redwoods. It is interesting how they grow in groupings rather than solitary. _Sacred Trees_ by Nathaniel Altman, published by Sierra Club Books, San Francisco, 1994, has a few things to say about redwoods: "Redwood trees were regarded as divine beings by the Chilula of Northern California, and wood from trees blown down in storms was used to make medicine boxes in which eagle feathers and other religious articles were stored. The redwood was also used by the Chilula to build square houses, round kick dance houses, and ceremonial sweat lodges." "The Ohlone of central California believed that all large trees, along with other natural forms, had the gift of intelligence, but considered the sacred redwood to be the most intelligent (and powerful) of all."
