    Thanks for posting that.  Very interesting.

    I once read of a related use for witch bottles that may shed some light
on their use as protective devices.  According to the book (sorry, don't
recall the title; library book I read years ago) a witch bottle could be
used to uncross yourself if you were being bewitched.  You made the bottle
(similar recipe, incl. your urine) and then put it on a fire.  The pins,
glass, etc. would prick the witch who was working you and the fire would
leave her in agony until she broke the spell.

    Maybe the idea of using a witch bottle as protection from bad luck was
derived from the above idea.  I think there are also Eastern European
traditions of using bottles filled with blood (bait) and saint's images
(protection after the bait is taken) to trap vampires.
