I'm pretty sure St. Christopher is one of the saints the Vatican demoted fairly recently, saying he never existed. Major bummer, because he is the main one for safe travel and much used. The story is that one stormy night a small boy knocked on St. C's door and asked St. C to carry him across a raging river. St. C did not hesitate and carried the boy. They almost got swept away in the middle but St. C believed and they got to the other side and then St. C found out that he had carried the Christchild. That is why he is the patron of travelers and invoked for safety. I don't think it matters that the Vatican ditched him. The populace still loves St. C. anyway. I have wondered about St. C's mental faculties. Afterall, endangering your life and that of a child in a raging creek doesn't seem rational to me. St. C. didn't know he was carrying the Christchild until he got to the other side. The boy looked just like an ordinary booger-eating 3 year old. I never understood the one about the prodigal son either, and have lived out the part of the ignored kid who does all the dutiful stuff and is taken for granted, when the troublesome kids are made much of every time they fart. Come to think of it, I don't get a lot of bible and saint stories. Oh well. pearlz
