In the hoodoo tradition, people make use of various forms of Blessing,
Healing, and Holy oils to anoint the person who needs help. The
anointing need not be done on the surgical area -- it is most often
applied to the forehead, with prayers. 

The simplest of these oils is the Holy Oil described in the Jewish
scriptures -- olive oil! Most folks who make a proprietary brand of Holy
Oil these days add one or more of the following things to it, like 
    essential oil of benzoin or a few benzoin lumps or 
    a few frankincense grains or 
    essential oil of sandalwood or a few sandalwood chips
    essential oil of myrrh or a few myrrh chunks 
-- all of which are derived from the holy incenses mentoioned in the Old
Testament. The oil should be blessed before use. 

Another thing people use in cases where there is pain is Holy Water,
sometimes stolen from a church.
