OrionCA :
# Past Hogwarts wizards seem to apprentice to senior wizards if they
# want to advance their magical education. When Tom Riddle left
# Hogwarts he "studied with all the great Dark Wizards of his day",
# as Dumbledore put it.

specialization might take the wizard toward some particular
instructor. do wizards *have* occupations other than those
mentioned, of teaching at Hogwarts and other schools, or
various civil or political authorities? they are shopkeeps
at least (as in Diagon Alley). what is the exact social
stratification of the Terra-Potter wizarding world?

# ...Hogwarts doesn't teach the Dark Arts and I doubt any
# respectable wizard would, either.

to the extent it instructs the defense against it (obviously
a rather tender subject at Hogwarts) it does teach Dark Arts,
but in specific you are quite correct. that there are books
on the subject at Hogwarts, however, is made clear:

...the Restricted Section. ... Unfortunately, you
needed a specially signed note from one of the
teachers to look in any of the restricted books,
and [Harry] knew he'd never get one. These were
the books containing powerful Dark Magic never
taught at Hogwarts, and only read by older
	students studying advanced Defense Against
	the Dark Arts.

and my memory is that Professor Moody (maybe he was being
impersonated?) wasn't completely reticent to instruct
Harry (and others?) in darker wizardry (of course, just
for his protection ;>).
