Along the way they pick on Muggles and Mudbloods for sport. According to Ron Weasley "There's not a wizard that turned bad that wasn't in Slytherin" but at that time he also thought Sirius Black was a DE and according to JKR Sirius was a Gryffindor. Of course, Ron was 11 years old at the time and might have been fuzzy on the finer points of DE history. The DEs' 11 year reign of terror ended when Voldemort got blown up trying to kill the infant Harry Potter. Some claimed to have been under a spell cast by Voldemort and were accepted back into the wizard community, others were captured and sent to the wizard prison Azkaban, some were killed, some were never caught. There were a few DE attacks after Voldemort was overthrown - Neville's parents were tortured into insanity because a couple of them thought they knew where Voldemort was hidden - but for the most part they laid low. Mad-Eye Moody spent the last few years of his Auror career rounding them up (that's how he lost his eye & leg and got a piece taken out of his nose) but there were still quite a few at large when he retired. When Voldemort was reborn his surviving followers reassembled to watch him destroy Harry Potter once and for all (GoF). It's not known if there are any new recruits, though almost certainly Draco Malfoy would join if his father would let him. The house elf Kreatcher might become a DE or a "DE Auxiliary", if there is such a thing. -- I'm on a journey in search of myself. If I get back first, let me know that I'm looking for myself and don't let me leave.
