GOETIA

My own limited experience in these matters has been that a manifesting
medium of any sort is -- if not a necessity -- then at least an extremely
good idea.

Incense smoke seems to work well, as does the use of a "dark" mirror -
akin to a regular mirror, except its reflecting surface is black instead
of silver. The operation in this case becomes rather akin to traditional
scrying, and it is best accompanied by a healthy number of flickering
candles and incense smoke to add to the effect. Spooky.

Supposedly, a slightly dampened incense mixture of wormwood and mugwort
is a good manifesting medium for Goetic operations, with the added bonus
of the resultant fumes being mildly hallucinogenic.

I have not tried this myself, but an online acquaintance of mine who has
done extensive Goetic work assures me that the mixture is quite effective.
I wouldn't want to use it anywhere but outdoors, though. And the gods only
know what exactly it's doing to one's fragile little mind. ;)
