it is not that we *should* recognize them but that there may be advantage
in doing so (at least privately) if we need one for some reason. why
should the prospector recognize a vein of valuable minerals?

Sar Draconis <>:
# An authentic adept would undoubtedly be disinterested in pretending to
# live up to the mythic expectations of believers regarding what
# constitutes an "adept." And this extends to the question of claiming or
# not claiming "adepthood." Therefore someone who openly proclaims
# adeptship might well be such, but would undoubtedly be indifferent on
# the question of whether anyone accepted such claims.

this is the first time I have seen a response to this question in this
newsgroup which conforms to my understanding of the qualities of adeptship.
there is generally too much presumption about what "an adept will do", and
the greater the restrictions on it the more likely all such conditions
will serve is the coalescing of deceiptful charlatans around an image.

# A certain nineteenth century French adept addressed the question thus,
# respecting the emperor Napolean III:

# "If I am not an Adept, then the Emperor has no need of me; but if I am
# an Adept, then I have no need of the Emperor."

well said, and whether there be need or no, there may be interest
nonetheless. (nagasiva)
