"The King in Yellow" was a book of short stories by Chambers, all of
which (some peripherally) discuss a mythical book of the same name.
Chambers book was originally published in the 1890's, and is well worth
the read if you can borrow a copy or obtain a later reprint. The
originals sell for outlandish prices.
The academic interest as to why and how the later upright and stolid
Chambers could write such a book, which reeks of derangement and
imagination, is of limited appeal.

"We had been speaking for some time in a dull monotonous strain before I
realized that we were discussing "The King in Yellow." Oh the sin of
writing
such words,--words which are clear as crystal, limpid and musical as
bubbling
springs, words which sparkle and glow like the poisoned diamonds of the
Medicis! Oh the wickedness, the hopeless damnation of a soul who could
fascinate and paralyze human creatures with such words, words
understood by
the ignorant and wise alike, words which are more precious than jewels,
more
soothing than Heavenly music, more awful than death itself."

- The King in Yellow, Robert Chambers

It's the origin from which the legend springs.

Originals of KIY run around five times that amount, and the book just
ain't that good.

Indeed not; it is concerned with magick.
