that's a different category of 'defense' than I meant.

focussing on magic, some deal with apparent forces arrayed 
against one by intentional disbelief. Chaotes use the force
of laughter in association with this as a sort of banishing. 
gathering together determined disbelief in the face of such
appearances is a way that one might proceed -- one which
has proven of benefit to a goodly number. 

this, and the contentions that components don't matter as
much as intention and belief, can have serious undermining
repercussions for those who are not conditioned to mental 
flexibility and a long-term familiarity with spellwork.
