Subject: Learning About Tarot Orig-To: TAROT-L@techunix.technion.ac.il 49980315 aa2 Hail Satan! re whether the significance of the cards is absolute/static: that depends entirely on the way the cards are used and what someone is attempting to achieve. in reflective or oracular activities the meanings are likely going to be less important overall, though the significance of the cards can take on a personal definition for the reader in both cases without a tremendous deteriorization of effect. if one is attempting to glean the insight professed to be a part of any specific deck through meditation and focussed usage, then study of primary sources, general understanding of symbolism and one's own psyche will be of great importance. re comparisons of texts from which to learn: texts are not always the best tools to use for learning tarot. sometimes it is better to have a human instructor to guide the integration of the deck, sometimes it is better to work alone and construct one's own meanings without the interference of other (conflicting or supporting) input. books of sparse detail and formulaic structure are probably better as lead-in introductions to the construction of one's own system of association with the cards. authors like Waite (_Pictorial Key to the Tarot_) and Eden Gray (_Mastering Tarot_ or _Tarot Revealed_, etc.) may be very helpful in this regard, giving very skimpy interpretations which can be turned toward one's purposes without intruding upon the process. sources which describe in rich detail, usually from the perspective of the designer, artist, the school(s) from which they are working, and with a complexity and profundity of content are best sought for the assimilation of a previously defined significance and the mysteries which lie behind them. re the possibility of poorly learning tarot: the worst way to learn the tarot is through a mixture of half- understood styles combined with an arrogant presumption of having complete knowledge of the tool and its valuable uses, generalizing in order to obtain authority. even without the half-understood admixture this arrogance and ridiculous facade can be a very great hindrance to one's studies and personal development (as well as a challenging and sometimes initiatory goad where founded on substantial study). myopia and ego-explosion are the twin dangers here, and keeping an eye on both open-mindedness and humility are remedies. blessed beast! tyagi@houseofkaos.abyss.com nagasiva
