To: alt.sufi,alt.islam.sufism,alt.divination,alt.magick,talk.religion.misc,alt.magick.tyagi From: tyagi@arkaotika.abyss.com (tyaginator) Subject: YahyaM: Sufism and Gematria Date: 27 Mar 1999 02:25:40 -0800 [from tariqas@world.std.com: YahyaM@aol.com] <<<< The Arabic word for coffee, qahwah, has a numerical total of 116, which is the same number as the divine attribute al-Qawi (The Strong). >> They have the same numeric value because they come from the same root and are inflected similarly. >> They are not from the same root. Qahwah is from the root Q-H-W (meaning "wine"), and Qawi is from the root Q-W-Y (meaning "to be strong"). As for inflection, the Arabic inflections (i`rab) are in the final vowels which we are not concerned with here. Let's break it down letter by letter: Qahwah is spelled qaf (100) + ha' (5) + waw (6) + ha' (5) = 116. Qawi is spelled qaf (100) + waw (6) + ya' (10) = 116. The comparison of numerical totals of words usually brings together words from different roots that have the same number. Here's an example: the famous phrase of `Ali Baba, iftah ya simsim (open, sesame) invokes sesame for no apparent reason. Except when you encode it numerically, it totals exactly 700. There's another famous phrase that frequently occurs in the Qur'an: al-samawat wa-al-ar.d (the heavens and the earth). This too totals exactly 700. What about the subject that concerns us all here---tasawwuf? The numerical total of the word ta.sawwuf is 576. The phrase that means "divine wisdom" (using Arabic words put together with Persian syntax) is: .hikmat-i ilahi, which also totals 576. For reference, here is the Arabic alphabet in numerical order (called abjad): alif 1 ba' 2 jim 3 dal 4 ha' 5 waw 6 zay 7 .ha' 8 .ta' 9 ya' 10 kaf 20 lam 30 mim 40 nun 50 sin 60 `ayn 70 fa' 80 .sad 90 qaf 100 ra' 200 shin 300 ta' 400 tha' 500 kha' 600 dhal 700 .dad 800 .za' 900 ghayn 1000 Anyone who has studied Hebrew or Aramaic will recognize that this is the same order as the 22 letters of the Aramaic/Hebrew alphabet (with the 6 letters peculiar to Arabic added on at the end).
