To: alt.magick.tyagi,alt.divination,alt.magick From: nagasiva@luckymojo.com (nagasiva) Subject: Gematria and Limitations in Language (was English Qaballa FAQ) Date: 30 Aug 1999 12:22:38 -0700 49990830 IVom Proximus Luxdiscusses the 'EQ' gematrian system: #> that Thelema no longer adds to 93 by your system, but 102 jake responds: # FYI Thelema adds to 93 in the Greek of the text - since the text uses # Greek letters changing it into English would be an abuse. In this # respect EQ is more rigorous than many systems, including AC's. I've often thought that this was one of the weak points of gematrian systems: that the fluidity of language makes it more and more difficult to determine which language-based numerolinguistic system to use to evaluate transcultural and multi-language documents. when you have a text that contains Greek, Hebrew, Egyptian, English, French and/or German, will you create a different "language-based" system to evaluate the terms, or will you fudge by saying that all of these terms are 'part of English' since the entirety is 'essentially an English document directed toward English readers'? or will you differentiate SOME terms based on the commonality of their usage or the way in WHICH they are used (e.g. as names), while leaving the rest to evaluate in their own systems? or will you create an "international system" (based in which language? Esperanto? :>) which 'solves for all languages'? in the case of jake's justification by virtue of 'avoiding abuse', where does such 'abuse' begin and when can we agree that it has occurred, rather than that the diviner used creativity to reveal a deeper significance hidden (no doubt) by the gods'? should we consult an 'Egyptian gematria' to evaluate 'Hadit' and 'Nuit' at the same time we use the Greek for 'Thelema'? nagasiva -- nagasiva@luckymojo.com; http://www.luckymojo.com/nagasiva.html emailed replies may be posted; cc replies if response desired
