	_Rosicrucians_

Watch out. Some people who call themselves Rosicrucians
keep putting strange ads in the newspapers. Don't talk
about present-day Rosicrucianism because one may be
	hanging around.

The Order of the Rosy Cross is one of the all-time
classic mysterious orders. It was invented as a joke
by Johann Valentin Andreae, who published three short
books anonymously in Germany around 1610.

One of Andreae's books was *Fama Fratentitas* [sic],
the story of Christian Rosenkreuz (the guy after whom
the old order was named), who supposedly started a
brotherhood of the Rosy Cross in the fifteenth
century. Another of Andreae's tracts, *The Chemical
Wedding*, was a typical piece of alchemical writing.
It didn't make any sense. The place was buzzing with
people who wanted to lay their hands on this secret
	knowledge.

Andreae later admitted to the world that his writing
was gigantic put-on, but because mystics have a
notoriously poor sense of humor, people refused to
believe him and have claimed to possess this pool
of knowledge in direct succession ever since.

The claim is useful for bluffers because nobody has
figured out what the brotherhood of the Rosy Cross
was all about. Arthur Waite, who wrote a definitive
book on the order, reached the same conclusion
	after more than 600 pages.
