To: soc.sexuality.general From: Kirsten StevensSubject: Re: what is semen composed of? Date: 29 Apr 2001 02:13:56 -0700 I found lots of info on this, but I liked this best... "dear dr. gardos, A conversation started last night amongst friends over 40 about men and women participating in oral sex (married partners). One husband insisted that sperm is pure protein and good for you! I replied that I thought the contents or breakdown of sperm was in fact waste matter! So, our question to you is, "What is the chemical breakdown of human male sperm?" It is the battle of women vs. men; please help us! --betting dear betting, Ooo, I love these little battles of the sexes! So, what do I get if I help you win? Actually, neither "team" is exactly correct, but I am sure you can spin my answer in a way that doesn't make you look bad :) The first thing we need to do is get our terms straight. What you are talking about is not really sperm but semen. Semen is the fluid that comes out during ejaculation and contains sperm. Semen is by no means a "waste product" like urine, but it is also not "pure protein." What semen is, is a carrier for the sperm contained in it. Only about one percent of the total volume of semen is actually sperm. Semen contains aboutonia, ascorbic acid, blood-group antigens, calcium, chlorine, cholesterol, choline, citric acid, creatine, deoxyribonucleic acid, fructose, glutathione, hyaluronidase, inositol, lactic acid, magnesium, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, purine, pyrimidine, pyruvic acid, sodium, sorbitol, spermidine, spermine, urea, uric acid, vitamin B12, and zinc -- but all in very modest quantities. Some of this is designed to nourish the semen in route, while other ingredients are designed to neutralize the acidic environment of the vagina (which would normally be inhospitable to sperm). In case you are wondering, most of these ingredients are indeed very healthy, and an average ejaculation contains only about 15 calories. So, next time... well, you know. Oh, and tell that husband he owes me ten bucks! :) -- August 26,1999" >From http://thriveonline.oxygen.com/sex/experts/drgardos/drgardos.08-25-99.html
