Ah, a mutual Australian student petting zoo! Our newest poster, student.uq.edu.au thinks that student.canberra.edu.au is a "great guru." How nice for them. > by the way catherine y... does it adequately depict the sex act, if > not then I guess sex mysticism can't be part of tantra can it? Sex mysticism is not "a part of tantra." Mysticism is a broad term that covers both non-religious and religious approaches to the divine through direct experience. Sex mysticism is a sub-set of mysticism that incorporates sexuality in its theory or in its practice. Sex mysticism does not specifically confine itself to what you refer to as "the sex act" (presumeably coitus or masturbation), but can address the divine through a variety of sexualized images and metaphors as well. There are, of course, sex-mystical aspects to certain schools of tantra, but sex mysticism itself exists beyond the confines of Indian religions or religious practice. It is found in arachaeological evidence of religious practices dating back to the neolithic period, when generative sexuality seems to have been the focus of a great deal of awe and worship. From that time forward, sexuality, to a greater or lesser degree, has played a role in the mystical and folk-religious poractices of people of many cultures and all eras. At certain times and in certain places, the focus of prominent sex mystics has been on "the sex act," at other times or place on the act of giving birth, or on the act of suckling an infant, or on the visualization of a "divine" form of human "beauty." The variety of these forms of focus, and their cultural shifts from place to place, seem to indicate that virtualy any aspect of sexuality can provide a gateway for entrance into a mystical state. And, of course, sexuality is only one of dozens of forms of physical and metnal induction to the mystical state. Others include meditating, dancing, chanting, drumming, eye-gazing, praying, ingestion of psychedelic drugs, and even the infliction of pain. Any one of these, or a combination of them, can be carried out in the physical world, or through visualization, contemplation, or a combination of techniques. Thus, sex mysticism is but a small facet of the entirety of mysticism in the human species. I hope this clarification helps you understand some of the issues we discuss in this newsgroup -- and i welcome to the forum! catherine yronwode Sacred Sex: http://www.luckymojo.com/sacredsex.html
